Why was the passing of the smoking firepot and the blazing torch between the halved animals symbolic of the covenant God made to Abram in Genesis 15?

In the ancient Near East, parties making a covenant would walk together between the pieces of slaughtered animals to signify: “Let this be done to us if we break the terms of this covenant.” This kind of covenant was often taken between a king and a vassal – the king promising protection, and the vassal promising obedience and loyalty.
